The 2008 Colorado Democratic Party Platform states:
“We hereby declare that the investigations into the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the illegal invasion of Iraq, Abramoff and other lobbyists, the hurricane Katrina response, and other major issues were inadequate and warrant review.”
This plank was accepted for the state level Colorado Democratic Platform after several caucuses and county assemblies in Colorado voted in favor of resolutions calling for a new investigation into the attacks of September 11, 2001. We see grassroots democracy at its finest when controversial subjects like this can rise from the caucus to the state levels in the political process.

RESOLUTION TO ESTABLISH A NEW, FULLY INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION OF
SEPTEMBER 11, 2001
WHEREAS, citizen trust in and control over our government are necessary for a healthy and vibrant democratic republic, and currently this trust and control are at an all-time low; and
WHEREAS, the attacks of September 11, 2001 (9/11), have been consistently used by the U.S. government as the basis for preemptive illegal wars and empire building, commonly known as the “Bush Doctrine”; and
WHEREAS, the so-called “war on terrorism” has become an excuse for the unprecedented destruction of civil liberties, the erosion of constitutional rights, torture, domestic surveillance of U.S. citizens, and illegal detention of immigrants; and
WHEREAS, the most disturbing facts and questions related to the attacks on 9/11 were not investigated by the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (9/11 Commission); and
WHEREAS, many of these critical facts and questions were presented to the 9/11 Commission by the Family Steering Committee for the 9/11 Independent Commission (family members of the 9/11 victims), and yet were ignored or distorted by what was, by their own admission, a compromised Commission; and
WHEREAS, abundant research by physicists, engineers, chemists, architects, and other scholars has been presented to the American public and the world in the ensuing six years which strongly implies that the officially sanctioned account of 9/11 cannot be true; and
WHEREAS, these hundreds of scientists, architects, and scholars–as well as pilots and aviation professionals, community leaders, family members of the victims, and senior military, intelligence service, law enforcement, and government officials–have all called for a new 9/11 investigation; and
WHEREAS, numerous scientific national polls reveal that a majority of Americans do not believe the official account–specifically, 81% of Americans believe that the government is hiding something or mostly lying about the 9/11 attacks, only 16% think the government is telling the truth, and 36% suspect that federal officials assisted in the 9/11/01 attacks or took no action to stop them so that the United States could go to war in the Middle East;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that this caucus calls for the immediate establishment of a truly independent Citizens Commission to fully investigate the events surrounding September 11, 2001; and that this Citizens Commission, to be modeled after the New York City “Act to Create a Temporary Independent Commission to Investigate 9/11” (nyc911initiative.org), shall have full subpoena power, shall be fully funded, shall have full immunities and prosecutorial discretion granted to elected prosecutors, and shall consist of Commissioners who are free from conflicts of interest, such as ties to the current Bush administration or to certain corporate interests, and who are known to the general public for their integrity–for example, citizens such as Dr. William F. Pepper (international lawyer), Dr. Edgar Mitchell (Apollo 14 astronaut), and Lorie Van Auken (9/11 widow)–so that we may restore trust in and control over our government, and so that we will have a greater probability of preventing attacks of this nature in the future, along with their dire consequences.
